World's largest regatta for Wally yachts in Portofino

11/03/2010

Set against the beautiful backdrop of Portofino, Italy, the first edition of the Nespresso Cup will be held from 7th May to 9th May 2010. Being the world’s largest regatta for Wally yachts, the Cup will welcome an extraordinary group of sailing legends, among them French offshore racing icon Loïck Peyron, Grand Prix sailing legends Paul Cayard (USA) and Francesco de Angelis(ITA). For those three days in May, with two races scheduled per day, 15 Wally yachts will battle it out on windward-leeward courses set up in front of Portofino.

Challenging racing on seductive yachts
Peyron says he has always found Wally Yachts very seductive and is looking forward to finally experiencing them first hand on the race course during the Nespresso Cup. Both he and de Angelis agree that the spectacular venue of Portofino will be the perfect location for such an event. "The venue is unique and it will be fantastic to see the harbour filled by big yachts like the Wallys. The racing there is never easy and all the Class Divisions will be competitive given the high level of the Teams. Hopefully this event will become a classic," commented de Angelis.

Yacht Club Italiano will host the Nespresso Cup and will also be responsible for the Cup's race management. Founded in 1879, the YCI is one of the oldest Yacht Clubs in the Mediterranean and runs the prestigious annual Giraglia Cup jointly with the Yacht Club de France and Société Nautique de Saint Tropez. It has been home to the Luna Rossa America’s Cup challenge, fronted by Francesco de Angelis.
