VO60 Particulars

Inside the boat - living space is scarce
Inside the boat
The living space shared by the crew under the deck is restricted to 10 square metres. There are no tables or chairs inside the boat, just bunks.
Bunks
Crews of 12 often share five to six sleeping bags and take little more than 1 or 2 changes of underwear for a 30-day leg. On some boats toothbrushes are cut in half, everything to save weight. No one has their own bunk and crew choose bunks where their weight will enhance boat performance.
Galley
No fresh food is taken because it is too heavy. To improve performance, crews only eat lightweight freeze-dried food such as noodles, stew or curry, reconstituted with water boiled on a single gas burner. There are six plates, six combined forks and spoons, and six mugs. The crew members take turns eating.
Toilet
The toilet is next to the galley and separated from it only by a thin piece of cloth. There is no privacy onboard.
Navstation
The navstation is placed below deck just in front of the steering wheels. The navigator spends around 80% of his time there. Each boat is also fitted with sophisticated satellite communication systems that enable the crew to transmit their position hourly as well as send messages, still and video images. This systems also enables the crew to receive weather information from the central Volvo Ocean Race office.
