Master of Yacht

Experience required prior training: 60 days at sea as skipper or watch leader in at least 5 voyages, at least in 3 different sea areas, including tidal waters (at least one area), 2 passages over 100 nautical miles as skipper
Certification required prior training: SRC, First Aid Certificate, Sea Survival
Minimum age required: 18 years old
Suggested number of training hours: 40 hours – training covers more exam preparation
Who can run the training: ISSA Instructor who holds MoY certificate
Who can do the examination: ISSA Examiner
Examination: 6 hours, including 2 at darkeness Maximum 3 candidates at a time
How to submit the application: To authorized ISSA school only

Candidate for Master of Yacht should possess the same knowledge as Offshore Skipper but should be more fluent in applying it.

Apart of that, Master of Yacht should:

  • have proper appearance (dressing and hygiene) and should behave properly (show respect to others)
  • be condifent in his actions;
  • be friendly to his crew;
  • remain calm in all situations and should not escalate stressful situations;
  • have good communication skills with the crew;

Rescue Skipper Training


The Rescue Skipper Instructor programme is the first in the series of professional programmes for Instructors, Skippers, Yachstmen and women.

The candidates for the instructor course undergo a selection process where they are verified in both physical and psychological terms.
Endurance training: swimming – 1000 m, having the injured on a tow – 100 m, staying on the water surface – 15 minutes, swimming in ABC equipment (dive mask, snorkel and fins) – 500 m, swimming underwater – 15 m, recovering items from up to 5 m depth.

Course guidelines:
Theory and practice, accident scenarios:

1. Training session: providing first aid, recovery position, protective barriers, automated external defibrillator (AED) use, providing first oxygen aid; practice.

2. Training session: providing auxiliary medical assistance, what to do in the case of bleeding, shock, spinal injury, seasickness, dehydration, sunstroke, choking, limb fracture; practice.

3. Training session: radiotelephonic communications’ rules, distress communications, urgency communications; practice.

4. Rescue session: safety measures, life protection measures, securing measures.
Development of the skills of using:
• Safety belt, life harness, buoyancy aid.
• Tying lifeline, making safety harness with a rope, tying bowline knot.
• Life ring, safety cord.
• Safety rope, danbuoy.

5. Practical skills development session:
• Practice: man overboard, manoeuvre under sail under power.
• Practice: man overboard, getting an unconscious person out of water, using life protection devices.
• Practice: getting a panicked person out of water, freeing techniques, using life

About Us

ISSA aims to provide opportunities worldwide for people who dream of learning to sail to make a start in a sailing school. Also, ISSA provides an international career path for sailing and windsurfing instructors to teach sailing and windsurfing in other countries.

ISSA is a non-profit international association which provides a framework of common standards of quality and safety for sailing and windsurfing schools throughout the world. The ISSA standards apply equally to the certification of students completing sailing and windsurfing courses at all levels of ability. All ISSA sailing and windsurfing instructors are trained to the same of levels of competence.

ISSA is managed by a committee elected from its member sailing and windsurfing schools.
